COURSE IN JEREZ DE LA FRONTERA (CÁDIZ, SPAIN)
COURSE IN JEREZ DE LA FRONTERA (CÁDIZ, SPAIN)
5th & 6th JUNE 2021
LIVING COURAGEOUSLY
Why is it important to show courage in life? Because living with courage means living from your heart and being true to your beliefs.
Courage is the ability to keep working towards your goal in the face of fear. It is not resisting or denying fear but acknowledging that fear is always there and carrying on regardless.
“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers fear.”
Nelson Mandela
Courage helps you to overcome your fears and achieve your desired goals. It gives you the strength to live life on your own terms and accept the consequences of your choices.
Whenever you choose to pursue a goal which goes against the advice of your loved ones, or defies social norms, it can create opposition and disapproval from the people who are important to you. In these situations, courage can help you deal with the negative feedback and lack of support and give you the strength to keep persisting until your goal is achieved.
Choosing a different path is not always easy, but living someone else’s idea of success is not courage, but convenience.
In general, there are six types of courage we may need to face life’s challenges:
1. Physical courage – Feeling fear yet choosing to act. This involves bravery at the risk of bodily harm or death; as well as developing physical strength, resilience and awareness.
2. Emotional courage – Following your heart. This can allow us to feel the full spectrum of emotions – pleasant and unpleasant – without attachment.
3. Intellectual courage – Expanding our horizons, letting go of the familiar. It is about our willingness to learn, unlearn and relearn with an open and flexible mind.
4. Social courage – To be yourself in the face of adversity. It involves the risk of social embarrassment or exclusion, unpopularity or rejection. It also involves leadership.
5. Moral courage – Standing up for what is right. This is about doing the right thing even when it is uncomfortable or unpopular.
6. Spiritual courage – Facing pain with dignity or faith. It helps us live with purpose and meaning through a heart centred approach towards all life and oneself.
So, how do you manage your fears? By training yourself to manage your emotional response to fear, so that you manage it, rather than it managing you.
One of the differences between ordinary people and extraordinary people is their level of courage. Courage is a part of human nature and it frees you of the need to seek social approval.
You don’t necessarily need to oppose things, but you will have great clarity on what you want and how you intend to achieve it. This gives great freedom.
If you are part of a group, then the group desires and needs are important and should always be taken into consideration. However, when you are doing something on your own then you should work towards achieving your own happiness. Once you make your own choices and decisions, then you must own them. You will always be in peace with yourself if you do this.
Without courage, life is simply a repetition of the past. There will be little of interest to look forward to, you will tend to simply survive, day to day.
Having courage gives a whole new meaning to life and is an essential ingredient of a happy and meaningful existence.
In this course Sri Swami Purohit will explore the different aspects of courage and show you ways in which you can apply them in your life.
The course will include talks, yoga and breathing exercises, meditation and relaxation techniques. The goal is for you to learn how to become more courageous in all areas of your life, overcoming your fears, and ultimately living a freer and more fulfilling life.
(No previous experience is needed. The exercises are apt for all ages and levels of fitness.)
